Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping surgery) is one of the most complex and sought-after facial aesthetic procedures. It allows surgical adjustment of the shape, size, position or symmetry of the nose to harmoniously complement the other facial features. At Aesthgery clinic in Pilsen, rhinoplasty is performed by MUDr. Kamila Šormová with emphasis on natural results and preservation of nasal function.

Who is rhinoplasty suitable for

Rhinoplasty is suitable for adult patients who are dissatisfied with the shape, size or proportions of their nose. The most common reasons for surgery include a nose that is too large or too small, a dorsal hump, an overly wide or narrow tip, asymmetry caused by a previous injury, or a congenital deformity. The procedure is performed on both women and men when facial skeletal development is complete. Rhinoplasty can also be functional — if the nasal septum is deviated and causing breathing difficulties, the surgery provides both aesthetic and medical benefits. Each patient presents with unique requirements and anatomy, so every operation is individually planned based on a thorough pre-operative consultation and thorough pre-operative consultation.

Open and closed surgical technique

Rhinoplasty is performed using two basic techniques — open and closed. In the closed technique, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible external scars. This method is suitable for less extensive corrections, such as reducing a dorsal hump or mildly adjusting the width of the nose. The open technique adds a small incision on the columella (the strip of skin between the nostrils), giving the surgeon full access to the entire nasal structure for more precise reshaping. This technique is chosen for more complex procedures such as tip correction, significant asymmetry or revision rhinoplasties. The duration of the operation ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the extent of the procedure. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia and the patient spends one night at the clinic.

Cartilage, bone reshaping and recovery

The foundation of rhinoplasty is precise modelling of the cartilaginous and bony structures of the nose. A dorsal hump is typically formed by a combination of bone and cartilage — the surgeon reduces and levels it using a rasp or scalpel. When adjusting the bony portion of the nose, the surgeon gently reshapes the bones into the desired position. The nasal tip is reshaped by adjusting the cartilages. Where needed, cartilage harvested from the septum is used as a graft to reinforce the structure. After surgery, the nose is stabilised with a splint worn for approximately 7–10 days. Swelling after rhinoplasty subsides gradually — it reduces significantly within 3–4 weeks, but fine changes in the shape of the nose continue to mature throughout the first year. Time off work is typically 2–3 weeks, longer for physically demanding occupations.

Risks, complications and long-term results

Rhinoplasty is considered a safe procedure, but like any surgical intervention it carries certain risks. Less serious risks include transient swelling, subcutaneous bruising, temporary changes in skin sensation, or temporary nasal breathing difficulties caused by post-operative swelling. More serious but rare complications include infection, scar tissue changes, asymmetry, or dissatisfaction with the aesthetic result requiring a revision procedure. At Aesthgery clinic, we minimise risks through careful pre-operative assessment, a thorough consultation, and experienced surgical execution. The results of rhinoplasty are permanent — once healing is complete at approximately 12 months, the result is definitive. A well-performed rhinoplasty naturally harmonises facial proportions and boosts the patient's confidence without the result appearing artificial or obviously operated upon.
