Otoplasty
Otoplasty (ear correction) is a surgical procedure that addresses aesthetically unsatisfying ear shape, size, or protrusion. By reshaping the ear cartilage, a natural and symmetrical result can be achieved that significantly boosts the confidence of both children and adults. At Aesthgery clinic, otoplasty is performed by MUDr. Kamila Šormová with emphasis on a gentle surgical approach and natural-looking outcomes.
Procedure overview
Who is otoplasty suitable for
Otoplasty is suitable for patients with prominent (protruding) ears, overly large ear lobes, or unfavourably shaped ear cartilage. Both adults and children can undergo the procedure, when the ear cartilage is sufficiently developed and stabilised. For children, correction is ideally performed before starting school to prevent the psychological impact of peer teasing. Adults opt for otoplasty for aesthetic reasons — a shape that has bothered them throughout their life — or following an injury that altered the shape of the ear. The procedure is suitable for both men and women of any age, provided they are in good general health and have realistic expectations about the outcome.
The procedure
Otoplasty is performed under local anesthesia (general anesthesia for young children) and takes approximately 1 hour. The surgical approach involves a small incision behind the ear, in the natural skin fold, so the resulting scar is completely hidden and virtually invisible after healing. Through this incision, the surgeon reshapes the ear cartilage — either by thinning, scoring, or placing permanent sutures that pull the ear closer to the head into a natural position. The resulting shape is symmetrical and proportionate to the patient's facial features. The procedure is outpatient — you go home the same day.
Recovery and results
Immediately after surgery, the ears are covered with an elastic bandage that protects the operated area and supports proper healing in the new position. The bandage must be worn continuously for approximately 2 weeks. After removal, wearing a loose headband — especially at night — is recommended for another month. Swelling and mild sensitivity resolve within 1–2 weeks. Sutures are removed on day 7–10. Most patients return to school or work within a week. Sports and physically demanding activities are permitted after approximately 4–6 weeks. The results of otoplasty are permanent — the reshaped cartilage retains its new form for life.
Risks and complications
Otoplasty is a safe and standardised procedure with a low rate of complications. Rarely, ear asymmetry, infection at the surgical site, suture reactions, or temporary loss of sensation in the skin behind the ear may occur. Less common complications include haematoma (bleeding under the skin) or hypertrophic scarring. At Aesthgery clinic, risks are minimised through careful pre-operative assessment, a sterile environment, and the surgeon's experience. During your consultation, Dr. Šormová will individually assess your case, explain the procedure in detail, and answer all your questions.
