What flank liposuction is and how it works

Flank liposuction is a surgical procedure in which the plastic surgeon removes excess fat cells from the flank area using a thin cannula and negative pressure. The result is a smoother body line and a slimmer silhouette in an area where fat otherwise persists the longest.

At our Aesthgery clinic, MUDr. Kamila Šormová uses the tumescent method, which is the gold standard in plastic surgery. Before the fat is suctioned, a tumescent solution — composed of saline, adrenaline and a local anaesthetic — is injected into the treated area. The adrenaline constricts the blood vessels and significantly reduces bleeding. The local anaesthetic reduces tissue sensitivity, and the solution as a whole firms the fat so the cannula removes it more precisely and gently. The entry incision measures approximately 5 mm and leaves behind a tiny, practically invisible scar. The procedure takes 1 to 2 hours depending on its extent.

Who is flank liposuction suitable for — and when is it not

The ideal candidate is a person close to their ideal body weight with localised fat deposits in the flank area. Skin elasticity plays a key role. The more elastic the skin, the better it adapts to the new shape after the fat is removed.

Flank liposuction is not a method for significant weight loss. In cases of pronounced skin laxity, our doctor will consider combining it with another procedure during the consultation — for example an abdominoplasty. Liposuction reshapes and slims down, but respects the natural anatomy of the body.

Recovery after flank liposuction

Wearing compression garments is mandatory after flank liposuction. It applies even pressure to the treated area, reduces swelling and supports even tissue healing without irregularities. We recommend wearing the compression garment for 8 weeks.

In the first few days it is normal for residual tumescent solution to leak from the mini-incisions. Swelling and bruising subside over 3 to 4 weeks. Patients return to sedentary work in 2 to 3 weeks. Sport is possible after 4 to 6 weeks. The final result of flank liposuction is visible after 3 to 6 months, when the swelling has completely subsided and the skin has adapted to its new shape.

Recommendation: Consistently wearing the compression garment is the most important thing you can do for the quality of the result. Do not underestimate it.

Are the results of flank liposuction permanent?

The results of flank liposuction are permanent. The fat cells removed during the procedure do not regenerate in the treated area. This is a fundamental difference compared to diet or exercise, where fat disappears temporarily and easily returns.

Permanence depends on maintaining a stable body weight. With significant weight gain, the remaining fat cells in other areas will enlarge, but the flank line will still remain slimmer than before the procedure. Maintaining the result rests on a healthy lifestyle, not on the need for a drastic diet.
